Editorial standards

Useful local reporting should make its facts, sources and limitations clear. These are the standards we use for Around Bergen stories and guides.

Policy updated October 22, 2026.

Sources and verification

We favour primary sources: municipal and county records, laws and ordinances, official schedules, published datasets, and businesses’ own information. We use established news outlets for reporting and historical context, and link to sources where they help readers check a claim.

We distinguish verified information from estimates, opinions and details we could not independently confirm. A quotation or announcement from a business is attributed to that source. An article about a place does not, by itself, mean we visited it.

Dates and changing information

Hours, prices, menus, event schedules and local rules can change. Guides identify the period covered by their figures and important dates where relevant. Readers should check the linked official source before travelling, booking or relying on a time-sensitive detail.

A publication date tells you when an article first appeared. An updated date records a substantive article revision. Where a “Checked on” date appears, it records a factual review of the information—not a change to the page’s design or search settings. A recent page update does not mean every fact is newly verified.

Corrections

We review reports of factual errors and correct verified mistakes. Substantive corrections are explained on the affected article; routine spelling or formatting fixes may be made without a correction note. Our corrections page explains how to request a review.

Editorial and commercial content

Paid placements and sponsored content must be clearly labelled. Affiliate links, when used, must carry a disclosure. A business mention or link is not, on its own, a paid recommendation. Payment does not remove our obligation to correct factual errors.

AI tools, photographs and graphics

AI tools may assist with research, drafting, editing, illustrations and infographics. AI output is not a factual source; claims still need checking against reliable source material. The publication remains responsible for the final text and images.

Photographs retain their credits where required. Stock or illustrative photographs should not be described as a photograph of a particular local business or event. AI-generated scenes and material AI alterations to real places should be identified where readers could mistake them for documentary photographs. Infographics should identify their data sources and dates; their figures need the same checks as the article text.

Bylines and reader contact

Our default publication byline is Around Bergen. An individual name is used when an article is specifically credited to that writer. Send questions about a story or these standards to hello@aroundbergen.com.
