In most towns, eating kosher means a long drive and a short menu. In Teaneck, the hard part is choosing. A few blocks hold a hand-rolled bagel, a pastrami sandwich, General Tso's chicken and a 24-ounce rib steak. All of it is supervised.
This guide covers where to go, what things cost, and who stands behind the certificate in the window.
Who certifies what
Most kosher restaurants here answer to one local body. That's the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County, or RCBC. It's the board of the county's Orthodox shul rabbis, based in Teaneck. It supervises nearly 50 places.
Not every place uses the RCBC. Some Teaneck spots carry national agencies like KOF-K or STAR-K instead. Most people accept both. Still, standards differ on details such as cholov Yisroel dairy.
The simple rule: read the certificate in the window, and check its date. Supervision can change, and a certificate on the wall is what counts, not a sign or a menu. If you keep a stricter standard, ask your own rabbi before you go.
Where to eat
Sammy's NY Bagels, Queen Anne Road (dairy). Sammy's has been rolling bagels by hand since 1991. On a Sunday morning it feels like half of Teaneck is in line. Its pickup menu lists a plain bagel at $1.85, or $4.75 with plain cream cheese. Nova lox with plain cream cheese runs $12.95. There's brick-oven pizza too, with a grandma slice at $4.75. Supervision is KOF-K.
Noah's Ark, Cedar Lane (meat). This is an old-school deli with a sit-down room. Pickles and coleslaw come to the table, and sandwiches arrive piled high. The menu lists hot pastrami and corned beef at $24.95 each. Recent diners say a full sandwich runs closer to $30.00. It's glatt kosher under STAR-K. Its current certificate is valid through May 31, 2027. On Fridays it closes at 2 p.m.

Sababa Grill, Cedar Lane (meat). For something quick, Sababa does Israeli grill food. Its online ordering menu lists a falafel in pita at $11.49 and a shawarma laffa at $21.49. A full shawarma entrée is $26.49. It's glatt kosher under the RCBC, and it also takes Shabbat orders.

Chopstix, West Englewood Avenue (meat). Chopstix has served kosher Chinese food in Teaneck since 1996. Regulars swear by the General Tso's chicken, the lo mein and the scallion pancakes. It's glatt kosher. It's open until 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and closes at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. It also sells Shabbat meals in tins. The RCBC lists it as a certified meat restaurant. Check the current certificate before you go.

etc. steakhouse, Palisade Avenue (meat). This is the one for an anniversary. It's glatt kosher under the RCBC and serves dinner only, Sunday to Thursday. Its online menu lists a 12-ounce rib eye at $71.00 and a 10-ounce filet at $76.00. Expect $56.00 for a 24-ounce bone-in rib steak. Small plates are listed at $15.00 to $29.00 before optional extras. The $15.00 soup was marked out of stock. You can bring your own wine if it's kosher mevushal and sealed. A private room seats up to 40.

Before you go
- Friday is short. Most places close early afternoon on Friday and stay closed on Saturday. Plan Shabbat orders by Thursday.
- Meat and dairy don't mix. Meat restaurants serve no dairy. Coffee comes with non-dairy creamer, and dessert is pareve.
- Bringing wine? At etc. steakhouse, it has to be kosher mevushal and sealed. Ask other places before you show up with a bottle.
- Check the certificate on the day. Supervision can change. If you're unsure, the RCBC's office in Teaneck can tell you who it currently certifies.
Information checked October 2026.
Kosher certification can change; confirm with the restaurant or the RCBC at (201) 614-4262 before you go.
